Magic at the Breesy Centre: Christmas Craft Fair and Santa’s Grotto

After attending the very first Donegal Giving gathering, I felt inspired to kick start a fundraiser close to my heart. This will now be our third year running, and I’ll admit I was slow to get it moving again. Part of that was because of the loss of my sister-in-law, Patricia Gallagher, who sadly passed away on 1 August 2025 after a short cancer diagnosis. The energy and encouragement from Donegal Giving gave me the push I needed to reach out to the committee and bring it back to life, and it feels very special to dedicate this year’s event in her memory.

A Community Tradition Built with Heart

Every December, our community in Cashelard comes together to create something truly magical. A Christmas Grotto built with love, laughter, and plenty of hard work. Local volunteers of all ages, from seasoned helpers to primary, secondary, and college students, roll up their sleeves to make the magic happen.

This year, visitors will walk through a beautiful handmade archway of Christmas foliage, leading into Santa’s Grotto. There, two cheerful elves will greet you warmly and introduce you to Santa Claus himself. Families can take photos, check the Nice List, and enjoy the festive atmosphere.

More Than Just Meeting Santa

After meeting Santa, the fun continues with games like “Guess the number of sweets in the jar” for the chance to win the whole lot. You can also sample delicious homemade bakes while chatting with neighbours, friends, and family.

In the main hall, a wonderful array of crafts awaits. From wooden birdhouses to teddy bears and dolls, saw crafts, candles, jams and bakes, gifts, Christmas decorations, and much more. Every item reflects the care and creativity of our local makers, all brought together for one magical day. There will also be a festive hamper draw and spot prizes to add to the fun.

Join Us on 14 December

Come along to the Breesy Centre, Cashelard (F94 VX76) on Sunday 14 December, from 11am to 4pm. Admission is free, and Santa arrives at 2pm.

The Charities We’re Supporting

Behind the sparkle, this event has a deeper purpose. It’s not only about raising funds but also about raising awareness of two incredible charities that support our community.

Liquid Therapy is a Donegal charity that provides inclusive surf and ocean therapy programmes, helping children and young people of all abilities experience the healing power of the sea while building confidence and joy.

Sligo Cancer Support Centre is a place of peace and hope for anyone affected by cancer, offering counselling, holistic therapies, workshops, and a caring environment for families during difficult times.

In Memory of Patricia Gallagher

This year’s fundraiser is dedicated in memory of Patricia Gallagher. Honouring her through this event makes the day even more meaningful.

For just one day, our Cashelard volunteers transform the Breesy Centre into a place of wonder. Not only to bring joy to boys and girls and their families, but also to shine a light on the vital work these charities do.
