In February 2024, something special began. Six women who had experienced domestic violence came together with a simple but powerful idea: to create a safe community where women and children affected by domestic violence could find more than just opportunities. They could find the tools to redefine their stories and reclaim their lives.
What started as a small group has grown into something far bigger than anyone imagined.
The journey began with Sport4Empowerment, an initiative developed in partnership with Donegal Sports Partnership. Their goal was to reach vulnerable individuals in our communities, and together we created a programme that’s now been recognised with awards and, more importantly, is genuinely changing lives.
We didn’t just want to offer activities. We wanted to create pathways for real, lasting change.
When DLDC joined us, they brought something vital to the table: support to help our participants improve and define their individual skill sets. It wasn’t long before our small group of six had grown to over 100 women and children across Donegal.
Our participants come from all walks of life, but they share common experiences. They’ve faced domestic abuse, trauma, mental health challenges, or struggles with addiction. Some have experienced all of these things.
What they have now is something many of them haven’t had before: a safe place to start healing and recovering. A community that understands. A space where they can begin to see themselves differently.
We’re active seven days a week, often running several different groups throughout each day. The variety matters because everyone heals differently, and everyone needs different things at different times.
Our activities include:
Each activity is carefully chosen not just for what it teaches, but for what it helps participants rediscover about themselves.
None of this would be possible without the incredible local organisations that help facilitate our groups. There are too many to list individually, but we’re grateful for every single one.
This is what community looks like in action. It’s organisations coming together, recognising a need, and deciding to do something about it. It’s volunteers giving their time and skills. It’s participants showing up for themselves and for each other.
From six women to over 100 families. From one idea to an award-winning programme. From trauma to healing.
4Empowerment is proof that when you create the right space, provide the right support, and build genuine community, transformation is possible. We’re not just helping people survive – we’re helping them rebuild their lives on their own terms.
