Building a
culture of

across Donegal

Donegal Giving is a county-wide, not-for-profit initiative dedicated to building a culture of giving throughout Donegal. It invites people of all ages and backgrounds to give what they can - not just money, but time, experience, life skills and opportunity. It celebrates the giving that is already happening in Donegal and inspires others to join in.

Irish Independent: Building a Culture of Giving Across Donegal

Irish Independant

This Irish Independent article by Kathy Donaghy features the launch of Donegal Giving, a county-wide initiative founded by Evelyn McGlynn to build a culture of giving across Donegal. Inspired by her mother’s community spirit, McGlynn created this movement where people share time, skills and knowledge rather than money. The article emphasises that small everyday acts can create meaningful change in increasingly isolated communities.

What is Donegal Giving?

This is the heart of it. Donegal Giving isn’t about downloadable apps or polished campaigns. It’s about people. It’s about acknowledging what’s already here, and building something together that celebrates giving in all its forms, for everyone in our community.

It’s about celebrating the giving that already happens in Donegal, and encouraging an ongoing culture of giving, through time, wisdom and the support we share as a county, and encouraging even more of it. We want to shine a light on what’s already there, and empower people, businesses, and community groups to give in ways that matter to them.

We’re not here to replace the fantastic work of Donegal volunteers — in fact, we’ll be signposting people to them!

Donegal Giving is about something broader. It’s about giving time, knowledge, opportunities, and wisdom; whether that’s mentoring a student, sharing skills with a local group, opening doors through your business, ideas, and by need. That’s what makes it exciting.

Everyone. Retired people who have a little more time. Businesses who want to open their doors through internships or Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Community groups who want to share what they do, or need support. Individuals who may just want to give back in their own small way.

No. It’s a not-for-profit, owned by nobody and everybody. If money ever comes in, it goes straight back into the project. What we do have, in abundance, is goodwill.

From conversations. From a recognition that Donegal people are givers by nature. From students, interns, businesses, and community friends who saw value in pulling this together.

Honestly, we don’t know yet and that’s okay. This is owned by the people. Donegal Giving will be shaped by feedback, by ideas, and by need. That’s what makes it exciting.

The simplest thing? Just start giving. Share what you know with someone who needs it. Offer your time to a local group. Mentor someone starting out. You're already part of this when you do that.

Want to take it further? Become a Friend of Donegal Giving, get in touch if you'd like to work on a project together, or tell us your story. We'd love to hear from you.

How Donegal Gives

This is our vision for a county where sharing what you know and giving what you can becomes second nature. Here's how different parts of our community can be part of it.

Businesses

Share leadership experience, offer mentorship and internships, and create pathways for emerging talent while strengthening your community impact.

This might look like inviting a student in for work experience, speaking at a careers day, or mentoring someone starting out in your field. Whatever time and knowledge you can give helps bridge the gap between learning and real-world opportunity.

Educators

Bridge academic learning with real-world application, connect students with opportunities, and promote lifelong learning across all generations.

You might bring local business people into the classroom, arrange site visits that show students what's possible in Donegal, or create projects where different generations learn from each other. You're already making these connections. Donegal Giving helps make them easier.

Not-for-Profits & Community Groups

Connect with like-minded organisations, share what works, and discover new partnerships that amplify your impact in the community.

You might share a programme that's working well, collaborate on events, or simply compare notes with other groups. When community organisations support each other, everyone's work goes further and reaches more people.

Individuals

Share lived experience, traditional skills, and local wisdom while building the welcoming spaces that make giving natural and sustainable.

You don't need a formal role to give. It might be teaching someone a skill you've picked up over the years, offering advice about a career change, or simply being present in your community. The wisdom that comes from living has real value.
